Books I love:
Self-Compassion, by Kristin Neff. I believe self-compassion is a fundamental happiness skill, and this book is an excellent, down-to-earth guide to cultivating self-compassion. A must-read for anyone would would like to be kinder to themselves.
Radical Acceptance, by Tara Brach. This book teaches meditation techniques for increasing both self-acceptance (in this respect, it’s similar to Neff’s book) and the ability to meet one’s circumstances with acceptance and equanimity. (It comes from a Buddhist perspective, but is accessible to anyone regardless of exposure/interest in Buddhism.)
Getting Real, by Susan Campbell. This is my favorite book on communication skills. It focuses on to how to be honest (and be yourself) while still being kind and effective. Campbell’s approach is, to my mind, more comprehensive and flexible than Marshall Rosenberg’s Nonviolent Communication (although they are certainly compatible), and her treatment of the subject is both more compassionate and more actionable than Brad Blanton’s Radical Honesty.
